AYO MATTHEWS

FORWARD

Age 27

DEBUT:  21st August 2016 v. Highgate Albion 2nd XI (Pre-Season Friendly Match at Enfield Playing Fields)

PROFILE: Ayo was brought along by goalkeeper Grant Baker for the 2016-2017 Pre-Season together with Harold Ofori after they both played 5-a-side alongside Grant in the Wednesday Night ‘Dream League’ in Stratford. After we had signed Ayo, he first really made an impact after coming on as a substitute in our first League match Away to Grange Park where he scored the winner and terrorised their defence with his skill, pace and strength as an out-and-out striker. He then became our first-choice centre forward after that and finished the season with 28 goals, which was the joint third-highest total in a season in the club’s 41-year history. Indeed Ayo very nearly finished as the League’s highest scorer that season, but a hamstring injury disrupted his progress last season and he struggled to regain his form until the season was almost over. Hopefully he can get back to his best this season if we can strengthen our squad to give him some service. Ayo lives in South-West Essex, but like most of our players, doesn’t mind travelling to Edmonton to play his football on a Sunday morning.

LEON McKENZIE-McKAY (Captain)

ATTACKING MIDFIELDER

Age 35

FIRST TEAM DEBUT:  14th September 2003 v. Broxbourne Rangers (Waltham Sunday League Premier Division Match at Flamstead End Playing Fields)

RESERVE TEAM DEBUT:  10th August 2003 v. Enfield Crusaders (Pre-Season Friendly Match at the Ashton Playing Fields, Woodford Bridge)

PROFILE: Leon trained with the club during the 2002-2003 Season after being brought along by Jerome Harrison (Lexton's Cousin) and immediately impressed everyone with his ability either as a forward or as an attacking midfielder. He previously played for various teams in the Cheshunt Youth League, but the 2003-2004 Season was his first taste of properly organised Men's Football and that saw him struggle against experienced defenders when he played for the First Team in the Premier Division. However, most of his appearances for the Reserve Team that season found Division Four much more to his liking where he was a key player with his pace, skill and trickery. Unfortunately Leon left the club the following season due to a lack of First Team opportunities and work commitments, but then returned for the 2007-2008 Season where he scored 8 goals in 12 matches for us in Division One. He then decided to join McKenzie Rangers the following season though, but returned to us in the Summer of 2011 for a third spell after McKenzies folded. However, he only played in 10 matches that season and then took the whole of Season 2012-2013 off because of a back injury. Despite competition for his signature from other teams in the Waltham Sunday League, Leon decided to sign up for us for a fourth time in October 2013 and he has since been a regular in the starting line-up in an attacking midfield role after retiring from playing regularly for Wormley Rovers in the Herts Senior County League on Saturdays due to increasing family commitments. Leon was appointed Club Captain and Player-Coach as soon as his father Tony McKay came in as Manager in 2016 and he played a big part in our Division Two title win that first season. Unfortunately though, Leon missed most of last season after suffering a broken ankle Away to FC Lokomotiv Thunder in early November, but he is now making a playing comeback this season despite approaching the ‘Veteran’ stage of his Rovers career.

DAVID NGUYEN

DEFENDER

Age 30

DEBUT:  5th August 2018 v. Downs (Pre-Season Friendly at Hackney Marshes)

PROFILE:  Dave is a diminutive but tough-tackling defender who has been brought along this season by his fellow South-East Londoner Curtis Baalam. He accepts that he will find it hard to gain a regular place in the starting line-up with so many other good defenders having been signed up, but he is happy to travel through the Blackwall Tunnel on Sundays to come and help us out when needed. Pronounces his surname ‘Un-guy-un’.

NANA OBENG

FORWARD

Age 18

DEBUT:  28th January 2018 v. Stifford United (Friendly Match at the Springhouse Club, Corringham)

PROFILE:  Nana joined us in January last season after being attracted by our professional filming of matches, as he was on the books of an Academy at the time with a view to gaining a U.S. Scholarship...which requires properly-filmed footage to be studied in order for players to be taken on. That means Nana could leave us at any time if a Scholarship offer comes through, but in the meantime we are hoping he will be a key player for us just as he was in a number of games towards the end of last season where he scored some good goals playing in an attacking wide midfield position.

HAROLD OFORI

CENTRAL DEFENDER

Age 26

DEBUT:  21st August 2016 v. Highgate Albion 2nd XI (Pre-Season Friendly Match at Enfield Playing Fields)

PROFILE:  Like Ayo Matthews, Harold was brought along for our Pre-Season Friendly against Highgate Albion Reserves back in August 2016 by his 5-a-side team-mate Grant Baker and immediately impressed as a tall, strong, composed central defender. We therefore signed him up straight away even though he lived in Dagenham at the time (and has now moved even further out to Basildon), and he since rewarded us by becoming a regular in our starting line-up alongside Ivan Bass at the heart of our defence for the past two seasons. Indeed Harold’s commitment in playing every week makes him a real key player for us and he has since been rewarded with the Vice-Captaincy and a place on the club Management Committee. Harold previously played 11-a-side on Saturdays for City Gates in the Ilford & District Churches League at Wanstead Flats but is now concentrating on Sunday football and 5-a-side in midweek only.
Is missing the first few months of this season due to work commitments in the USA, but will give us a boost when he is back.

VISHAL PATEL

DEFENSIVE MIDFIELDER

Age 26

DEBUT:  6th August 2017 v. FC Alpha (Pre-Season Friendly Match at Wadham Lodge 3G, Walthamstow)

PROFILE:  ‘Vish’ was brought along to the club last Pre-Season by Harold Ofori. Although being our smallest player and having to wear a medium-size (No.18) shirt with our new (predominantly large size) kit, Vish is very comfortable playing in a central midfield holding role where he is good on the ball and moves it quickly with good short passing, therefore giving us a different option to the bigger, more powerful players that Manager Tony McKay often uses in that position. Vish is another player based in East London where he lives almost opposite West Ham’s old Boleyn Ground, but having previously played on Sundays for an Asian team in Middlesex, travelling up the North Circular Road to play regularly for us  is a much better option travel-wise. Has been having problems with an ankle injury since last season but will hopefully be back in contention at some stage.

TYRONNE PETRIE

CENTRAL DEFENDER

Age 34

DEBUT:  30th November 2014 v. Broxbourne Athletic (Waltham Sunday League Division One Match at Hazelwood Sports Ground)

PROFILE: Tyronne is a strong central defender who was initially brought along to Pre-Season Training in July 2014 by Leon McKenzie-McKay. However, despite having previously played for Boreham Wood amongst others, he was not taken on by Manager James Hatchett, who preferred to bring in his own new players for the start of the season. Ironically though, just before James left in November 2014, one of his players (Kevin Dennis) brought Tyronne along again as the club Tyronne eventually signed up for (Oakwood United) had just folded, and as Kevin and Tyronne had previously played together for Welwyn Garden City in the Spartan South Midlands League on Saturdays, Kevin knew that Tyronne was actually a good player ! Although Kevin then left along with the rest of the players James brought along, Tyronne stayed because he knew Leon and he therefore made his debut for us in replacement Manager Simon Jackson’s first match in charge. Although Tyronne scored an unfortunate Own Goal in that match, he went on to play a major part in us reaching a Cup Final for the first time in 29 years at the end of Season 2014-2015 and his experience either in the centre of defence or more often than not in a midfield holding role was also crucial to our success in winning Division Two in the Barnet Sunday League two seasons ago. Work commitments at Bristol Street Motors in Waltham Cross do sometimes rule Tyronne out of matches, but we have been compensated for that by them sponsoring rain jackets for the club, a deal which Tyronne arranged. Tyronne is also on the club Management Committee as one of our Player-Coaches.

STEPHEN ROUSSETY

GOALKEEPER

Age 29

DEBUT:  20th December 2015 v. Evolution (Waltham Sunday League Division One Match at Enfield Playing Fields)

PROFILE:  Stephen is a goalkeeper who was brought along to the club in December 2015 by his work colleague at London Underground Ivan Bass to cover for the frequent absences of first-choice keeper Grant Baker. Unfortunately Stephen didn’t get too many chances to show what he could do in that first half a season due to opposing teams dropping out and the League eventually folding, but under our new goalkeeping coach Bob Cleary, Stephen began to play regularly and ended up winning the club’s Most Improved Player Award after playing a big part in our Division Two title success. Work & family commitments and/or niggling injuries have since put paid to him making regular appearances for us though, but he is still registered to play if our new regular goalkeeper Ian Whitmore is unavailable..

SAID SAID

RIGHT-BACK

Age 19

DEBUT:  26th August 2018 v. FC Potters Bar ‘18 (Pre-Season Friendly at Enfield Playing Fields)

PROFILE:  Said (pronounced ‘sigh-eed’) is a new player this season who has been brought along by Nassir Ali along with Mo Ali. Like Mo, he is inexperienced at the adult 11-a-side game and will more than likely be on the fringes of the starting line-up for most matches at this stage. Has shown some good touches though and he can also play in midfield as well as at right-back.

JORDAN UMPIRE

ATTACKING MIDFIELDER

Age 27

DEBUT:  14th January 2018 v. Chingford Athletic (Friendly Match at the Peter May Sports Centre, Walthamstow)

PROFILE:  Jordan joined us in January last season after seeing our struggles on You Tube and consequently asking for a trial. We then fixed up a Friendly match against Chingford Athletic for him and one or two others where he impressed in a right-sided attacking midfield role but unfortunately he made very few appearances once we signed him up to play in League matches and that has continued so far this season as other commitments have taken precedence.

OSHADE WATSON

DEFENSIVE MIDFIELDER

Age 28

DEBUT:  14th January 2018 v. Chingford Athletic (Friendly Match at the Peter May Sports Centre, Walthamstow)

PROFILE:  Oshade joined us during last season after coming along to watch after his previous club Panathinaikos (from the local KOPA League) had played us in the London F.A. Sunday Junior Cup. As we lost that match 5-0, Oshade could see we needed defensive reinforcements, and as he had suffered from a lack of game time for Panathinaikos due to the KOPA League’s ‘no more than three non-Cypriots’ rule, he decided to join us instead. However, he struggled for form and fitness after joining us as a long-term knee injury was still affecting him, but he has got himself fitter during Pre-Season and will probably feature either as a holding midfielder or a defender.

IAN WHITMORE

GOALKEEPER

Age 32

DEBUT:  12th August 2018 v. Oracle Rangers (Pre-Season Friendly at Enfield Playing Fields)

PROFILE:  Ian is a highly experienced goalkeeper from the East London area who answered our requests on Twitter during the Summer for a goalkeeper who could play regularly for us after we had been let down badly in that department last season. He has previously mainly concentrated on Saturday football at Essex Alliance League level (below the Non-League Pyramid), but he has good height and better handling and kicking capabilities than the various goalkeepers and stand-ins that we had to use last season, thereby giving us an extra dimension to our play defensivly. Is probably our most important signing of the Summer.

SAM WOOLLEY

RIGHT-BACK

Age 20

DEBUT:  11th February 2018 v. Grange Park (Barnet Sunday League Division One Match at Clowes Sports Ground, N13)

PROFILE:  Sam is a young defender from Abbots Langley near Watford who was brought along by Oshade Watson half-way through last season. He can play anywhere across the back four but invariably filled in for Lexton Harrison at Right-Back after joining us, showing good awareness, composure and passing ability. However, like Oshade, a lack of pace and fitness was an issue last season after coming back from a long-term injury, but he has got himself in shape this Pre-Season and will hopefully be a regular in the side with us having such an ageing squad.
