OUR
TEAM and the
LEAGUE WE PLAY IN |
|
For the 2008-2009
Season, we will again be running just the one team
in
Division One
of the
MERCURY WALTHAM SUNDAY LEAGUE,
this being a men's League which covers mainly the Boroughs of Enfield
and Broxbourne. This League has now been
reduced to five Divisions (a Premier Division
and then Divisions 1-4), but is still recognised as
being one of the strongest Sunday Leagues in the South-East of England,
as most teams include players with experience from playing in Senior
(Semi-Professional) Saturday football.
Our First Team spent three seasons in the Premier Division from Season
2002-2003, finishing third in that first season, but we were relegated
to Division One at the end of Season 2004-2005 and have since struggled in the
lower half of that Division for the past three seasons. This has been due to
a number of experienced players having increasing work
& family commitments and we are now in the middle of a big
re-building process with new and younger players which we hope will
eventually see us return to the Premier Division.
We ran a Reserve Team in Division Four of the Mercury Waltham Sunday League for
Seasons 2003-2004 and 2004-2005 to cater for a number of long-serving
players who were unable to get a regular game in the First Team and also
to bring some younger players through for an eventual progression into
the First Team, but
after finishing bottom of the table without winning a single match in
the 2004-2005 season, we decided to withdraw the Reserve Team from the
League and revert to just running one team.
The Mercury Waltham Sunday
League season starts on the first Sunday of September and finishes at the
end of April.

out more.
We also enter two teams in a Summer
7-a-side Football League on Astroturf at the Southgate Hockey Centre
every year,
which helps to maintain our players fitness. This is when we invariably
try out new players who want to join the club.

LEAGUE
CUP COMPETITIONS THAT WE ARE INVOLVED IN |
|
We will be playing
in the ROY BAILEY CHALLENGE CUP (which is for all teams
throughout the League) and also the LEAGUE SENIOR CUP, which is
for all teams in the Premier Division and Division One.
The League Cup Draws for this season can be found in full
here on the
League Website from late-August onwards. |
|
|
|
COUNTY
AFFILIATION |
|
We are affiliated to the
LONDON FOOTBALL
ASSOCIATION, which means that we
can enter London F.A. Cup
competitions each season.
As we are a
Division One team, we currently enter the London F.A. Sunday Intermediate Cup. This
competition is for
Premier Division teams from other (more inferior) Leagues and teams from
Division One or Two of stronger Leagues like our own. We
first entered into London F.A. Cup competitions in 1988 on joining the
Mercury Waltham Sunday League, but have never reached a Cup Final. We
lost 7-0 in the London F.A. Sunday Junior Cup Semi-Final
to the eventual winners back in the 1993/94 Season, but that was our
best ever performance (so far !). We actually entered the London F.A.
Sunday Challenge Cup (the top London F.A. Sunday Cup
competition) for two seasons when we were in the Premier Division,
losing 2-1 in the First Round to the eventual winners St. Anselms at our
first attempt and 5-1 to the eventual Runners-Up Dees in the First Round
the following season.
The London F.A. Cup Competitions can see us having
to travel to 'awkward' places to get to such as Mitcham, Crystal Palace
and Putney (for 10.30.a.m. kick-offs !), but quite often the teams we play in London F.A. Cup Competitions
are not as good as those we face in the Mercury Waltham Sunday League.
All County Cup draws will be on
the 'Latest Club News' page when we receive
them....or you can
visit the London F.A. website, where they list all the draws and
results in full. |

COLOURS
|
|
Our current first choice kit is
Jade (Green) Shirts, Black Shorts &
Jade (Green) Socks, Green being our traditional
club colours.
Our change strip is
Orange Shirts,
Black Shorts & Black Socks,
although we very rarely end up having to change as Jade is quite a
distinctive colour that no other teams seem to wear ! |
|
|
|
OUR
KIT SPONSORS (& ALSO WHERE WE DRINK AFTER MATCHES) |
|
 ON
BROADWAY is our regular 'haunt' for post-match drinking sessions on a
Sunday afternoon. The pub is situated on the corner of Station
Road and Green Lanes in Winchmore Hill, London N21 and is an ideal venue
for
Sunday League Football Teams (there are at least six teams who use it to
drink in after matches on Sunday lunch-times) as it has a separate Games
Room (including Pool Tables), plenty of big screens showing televised
football, and best of all...attractive barmaids serving free hot
food for all the Football Teams using the pub.
ON BROADWAY are also our
current kit sponsors and also sponsored the purchase of five
thermal substitutes suits during the 2002/2003 Season.

|
HOME PITCH |
|
Our
Home Pitch is Pitch One at
HAZELWOOD SPORTS GROUND, which is off Hedge Lane in Palmers Green,
London N13. We have been using this excellent venue as our Home Ground
since 1985 and have been on Pitch One since the early-90's.
There are several different entrances to the ground, but the
one preferred by most of our players is a small alleyway
in-between house numbers 66 & 66A
in Connaught Gardens which leads directly to the changing rooms.
to see a map of the ground with this entrance marked or
CLICK HERE to see a satellite map of the pitch. For those who rely
on Sat-Navs, the postcode for this alleyway entrance in Connaught
Gardens is N13 5BS.
There is normally
plenty of car parking space in Connaught Gardens, but
there
are also walk-in entrances to the ground in Hedge Lane, Madeira Road,
New River Crescent and Lynbridge Gardens, with car parking spaces in
those roads as well.
There
is actually a car park inside the ground at the Lynbridge Gardens entrance,
but this now has to be kept locked as it is only for the use of the
Youth Teams that play at the venue. (They change in the car park and
have the keys).
Hedge
Lane is otherwise known as the A111, which runs between Green Lanes in
Palmers Green to the 'Cambridge Roundabout', a major junction in
Edmonton where the A406 meets the A10.
Our pitch is shared with
fellow Mercury Waltham Sunday League side St. Mary's on Sundays and is also used every Saturday
by A.F.A. side
Broomfield,
who are 'allowed' to roll & fork the pitch and cut the grass themselves, despite it
being an Enfield Council ground ! Broomfield are therefore unhappy that
ourselves and St. Mary's take advantage of this, and we have been living
with rumours for several years that Enfield Council might throw us
off at some stage !.
The pitch is therefore normally in excellent condition (except for when it rains heavily every Saturday
night) and there is also the advantage of it
being right outside the changing rooms entrance, which are quite reasonable
by Sunday League standards in so much as every team (and
the officials) have their own rooms and the showers work (most of
the time !). In fact most teams in our League rate it as their favourite
away venue despite it being the furthest from the League's base in
Waltham Cross.
Due to
Enfield Council cost-cutting measures and ground-staff cutbacks, both ourselves and St. Mary's
now have the keys to open and shut the changing rooms at Hazelwood
ourselves for Sunday morning matches,
which we both agreed to do despite having to pay the same pitch
hire charges as normal. The alternative was for both teams to play at
Enfield Playing Fields (an atrociously poor venue) instead.
These measures mean that players have to take it in
turns on a Rota basis to sweep out the changing rooms and showers after
each Home match, but our players are always prepared to do this rather than play at Enfield Playing Fields.
(A lot of players actually decide to join the club because Hazelwood has
such a good playing surface). |

|
KICK-OFF
TIMES |
|
All League & Cup Matches in the
Mercury Waltham Sunday League
Kick-Off at
10.30.a.m., as do the majority
of matches in London F.A. Sunday Cup Competitions.
Players must arrive at the venue for matches at least 30 minutes before
kick-off (i.e. before 10.00 a.m.) or they will be fined 50p for a first
offence, up to a maximum of £5.00 for any subsequent offences.
Players will also be fined 50p (for a first offence) if they arrive late
for a set time at a meeting place for travelling to away matches, with
subsequent offences being punished by a fine up to a maximum of £5.00.
If a player or players are late due to the fault of another player (e.g.
travelling in the same car), the player causing the late arrival will be
liable to pay the fines of all the players travelling in the same
vehicle.
However, fines will NOT be imposed if you phone or text a Management
Committee Member before 10.00.a.m. with a reasonable excuse for being
late. (See 'Who To Contact On
Matchdays' below).
From
this season onwards, it will be entirely at the Team Manager's
discretion as to whether a player is fined or not. The fine imposed by
the Team Manager will then be added on to the player's Subs owed without
it having to wait until a Management Committee Meeting to be discussed.
However, appeals from players against fines imposed will be discussed by
the Management Committee.
Please
note that unlike other clubs, we do not turn up an hour before kick-off
and do a proper half-hour group warm-up on the pitch. This is mainly
because too many of our players have family commitments and cannot get
to the venue that early. Invariably our players turn up between
10.00.a.m. and 10.15.a.m., then get changed straight away and do their
own individual stretching exercises just before the kick-off, especially
at Hazelwood where the changing rooms are right next to the pitch.
Despite this last-minute rush, we have not caused a late kick-off for
about 10 years, but it does inconvenience Manager Trevor Hughes for his
team-talks, and if we have a large squad of good players available for a
particular match, he may well leave players out of the starting line-up
if they turn up after 10.00.a.m. |
|
|
|
UNAVAILABILITY
FOR MATCHES & ANNOUNCEMENT OF SQUADS |
|
If players are not available for a match
they must inform a member of the Management Committee as soon as
possible before the actual day of the match.
If players are forced to cry off on a Sunday morning through illness,
injuries received from a Saturday match or any other ‘last-minute’
problem, they must phone or text a member of the Management Committee
immediately (see 'Who To Contact
On Matchdays') in order to
allow replacement players to be contacted in time.
All registered
players are expected to turn up to every match unless:...
(a) They inform a
Member of the Management Committee beforehand that they are unavailable,
or
(b) They are not named in the squad listed on the
Forum
and the
Fixtures page.
Please note that the squad will normally be listed on both the
Forum
and the
Fixtures page at the start of the week. (Normally on a Monday). If players
do not have Internet access, they will have to phone a Management
Committee Member who has in order to find out who has been named
in the squad. It is club policy that
we DO
NOT PHONE each player to tell them if they are playing or not...and that
they have to phone us if they have not got access to the
Internet. We will only contact players to
tell them if they are in the squad if they were not originally
named and have had to be
called up as a 'last-minute' replacement.
If players need to know if they are in the
starting line-up before
they set out to travel to a particular match, they must phone Manager
Trevor Hughes only ! If a player does not want to attend a match because they are only a
substitute, they will not be fined if
they phone Trevor beforehand, but they may find it difficult to
get back into the team/squad for future matches depending on the
circumstances concerning their non-attendance. |
|
|
|
SQUAD SELECTION POLICY |
|
We always pick a squad of 16 for each match, even
though the League (and London F.A.) rules state that only three
substitutes can be used from a maximum of five named. From our
experiences over the past two or three seasons, we know that there are
always going to be players dropping out of the squad at the last minute
on Sunday mornings due to family commitments and that more often than
not we will end up with just a squad of 14 or less.
If players have not been picked for the squad of 16 but are not doing
anything else on a Sunday morning, it is always advisable for them to
phone Manager Trevor Hughes on his mobile between 9.30. & 10.30.a.m. to
find out if we are suddenly short of players. As for the starting
line-up, Trevor will be fielding what he considers to be his strongest available side for each match (subject to
certain club rules to be used at his discretion). |
|
|
|
WHO
TO CONTACT ON MATCHDAYS |
|
All players MUST
ensure they insert the Mobile Phone Numbers of Management Committee
Members into their own Mobile Phone Address Books so that they can phone
or text one of them on a Sunday morning (between 9.30.a.m. and the
10.30.a.m. Kick-Off time) if they are going to be late for a match or
have had to ‘cry off’ at the ‘last minute’.
This
is vitally important !
If you do not
get any answer and have to leave a message, please also try phoning
somebody else as the first person you phoned may be on holiday or
working and therefore not attending the match.
Please try and speak
to someone rather than leave a voice or text message unless you know
that person is definitely attending the match.

Committee Members' Mobile Phone Numbers are as follows:

Secretary).........................

'STARTING
LINE-UP' PRIORITIES WHEN PLAYERS ARRIVE LATE FOR MATCHES |
|
If a player who is originally due to be
in the starting line-up for a match does not arrive at the venue until
after 10.20.a.m. (i.e. 10 minutes before the scheduled kick-off time)
and has not phoned beforehand to inform the Team Manager (or Management
Committee Member) that he will be late, then that player will be named as a
substitute or even left out of the squad altogether (subject to suitable
replacements being available at the Manager's discretion).
If a player who is originally picked to be in the starting line-up does
phone a Management Committee Member on their mobile to say he will not arrive at the venue
until after 10.20.a.m., then that player will still be named in the
starting line-up if he is changed and ready to play when the referee
insists on the game kicking-off. (If the referee indicates that the club
will be fined if we do not kick-off on time, then the player
arriving late will be replaced in the starting line-up by a substitute
(subject to availability) in order to avoid starting the game with only
10 men).
If players cause a late kick-off by arriving late, they will be liable
to a fine up to a maximum of £8.00 if the club is fined by the League. |
|
|
|
FAILING
TO TURN UP FOR A MATCH |
|
Any player named
in a squad who does not turn up for a
match without a reasonable excuse will be fined up to a maximum of
£10.00 and/or suspended for the next match. |
|
|
|
POSTPONEMENTS
ON THE DAY OF THE MATCH |
|
Quite
often during the course of a season, we have a number of matches called
off at the last minute (i.e. between 8.30.a.m. & 10.00.a.m.) on a
Sunday morning due to waterlogged or frozen pitches or no referee being
available. In those instances, all players named in the squad will be
contacted by Management Committee Members between those times in an
effort to save them an unnecessary journey. If the weather looks
'dodgy', but you have not heard from a Management Committee Member by
10.00.a.m., then you MUST take it that the game is still on and turn up
at the venue. Any player who assumes that a game will be called off
and therefore stays in bed will be fined under the 'Failing To Turn Up
For A Match' rule if the game goes ahead.
Club
Members who are not in the squad for a particular match will not be
phoned, so if they intend
coming along to watch the game they are advised to check with a member
of the Management Committee first to see if the game is still on.
As a guideline to possible postponements, please read the details below: |
-
IF
WE ARE DUE TO BE PLAYING A HOME MATCH AT HAZELWOOD SPORTS
GROUND
(or at any other Enfield Council grounds such as Enfield Playing
Fields or Bush Hill Park), a
decision on the state of the pitch has in the past always been made
by an Enfield Council groundsman sometime between 8.00.a.m. and 9.00.a.m. on the morning
of the match. We then have to phone a number at Enfield Playing
Fields after 9.00.a.m. to find out
whether the game is still on or not.
However, last
season they tended to make decisions on a Friday afternoon instead
and seemed to be allowing Referees (or the Broomfield First XI
Manager in Hazelwood's case !) to make a decision on Sunday mornings
if the pitch had been deemed playable on a Friday.
If Council groundsmen are inspecting the pitches on a Sunday morning, then invariably games are called
off if it rains
heavily at any time from Saturday mid-day onwards, but particularly
if it is still raining when the pitches are being inspected at
8.00.a.m. on the morning of the match. (The Council then tend to
call off every pitch in the Borough whenever there is a sign of any
puddles forming !).
However,
in the case of frozen pitches, Enfield Council's groundsmen do not
call the games off and leave it up to the referee to make a
decision, which means we all have to turn up at the venue even if it
seems ‘obvious’ that the game will not go ahead. (If the
opposition are there but our players don’t bother to turn up
because they think the game will be off, then the opposing team will
be given the points if the referee deems the pitch playable).
-
IF
WE ARE DUE TO BE PLAYING AWAY ON A BROXBOURNE COUNCIL PITCH OR
IN WALTHAM ABBEY,
we should be informed (by the League Fixture Secretary or the
opposing Club Secretary) by mid-day on the Saturday if the game has
been called off because of a waterlogged pitch. This is because
Broxbourne & Waltham Abbey Council groundsmen always inspect the pitches on a Friday
(or even a Thursday !) as they are not paid to do so at weekends.
This invariably results in pitches either being deemed unplayable on
a Friday but then ending up in a perfectly playable condition by the
day of the match or being deemed playable on a Friday only
for it to rain non-stop on a Saturday and Sunday, leaving the pitch
badly waterlogged but still allowing teams to play on it (unless
referees decide to call the game off...which they rarely do because
they want their £30.00 !). The only advantage with Broxbourne
Council’s policy of calling games off on a Friday is that it gives
players the chance to arrange other activities over the weekend if
they know the game is definitely off.
-
There are also
numerous TEAMS
IN THE LEAGUE WHO OWN THEIR OWN GROUNDS
OR PLAY ON PRIVATELY-OWNED GROUNDS. These are obviously the best teams to be playing
when the weather is ‘dodgy’ because they can make a sensible
decision themselves at a convenient time.

PRE-SEASON
TRAINING & FRIENDLIES |
|
We tend to do very little Pre-Season
Training because we keep ourselves fit by playing in the Summer 7-a-side
League, but when we do,
we use Enfield Playing Fields (Ladysmith Road entrance) as this venue is
central to where the
majority of our players live.
Click
Here
to see a
map of the entrance.
We normally arrange a number of Pre-Season Friendlies on Sunday mornings
during August.
CLICK
HERE to visit our Fixtures page
for details of these.
Our usual policy regarding NEW PLAYERS
is to only use those who have been recommended by existing club members
when picking squads for Pre-Season Friendlies, unless we have seen other
new players at a Pre-Season Training session or in 7-a-side League
matches first. |
|
|
|
TRAINING
DURING THE SEASON |
|
Due to work & family
commitments for the majority of our players and the unavailability of
floodlit Astroturf pitches between 7.30 & 9.00.p.m. on Tuesday,
Wednesday or Thursday evenings, we have not been able to train during
the Season for the last three years...something which has undoubtedly
been a big factor in us repeatedly struggling to avoid relegation in
Division One.
However, we have now purchased a portable floodlight and will be
using it to train on a grass area behind the far goal on the Barrass
'Stadium' pitch in
Edmonton where Terry Moore's Old Edmontonians side play on Saturdays.
Terry has arranged for the Old Edmontonians Clubhouse car park to be opened
for us (from just after 7.00.p.m.) so that we can park inside the
'Stadium'.
We will be
'playing things by ear' on a week-to-week basis and only arranging
training if by each Wednesday afternoon it looks like we have at least
10 players who are willing and able to attend the following evening.
If training
is on, we will
therefore meet in the car park at 7.15.p.m. ready to start training
at 7.30.p.m.
If players cannot get
there until after 7.30.p.m. and miss the 'warm-ups', then that's their
problem.
There are floodlights just outside the 'stadium' which are used every
Thursday night by Edmonton Sunday League teams (as we actually used to
do over there way back in the late 70's !), and enough of that light
reaches into the stadium. By using our portable
floodlight as well, we should have enough light for a 7-a-side practice
match and shooting practice into the back of the goal on the Barrass
Stadium pitch. (Old Edmontonians have been informed that we are going to
do this and they have no objections).
Terry didn't mention this, but we may even be able to have a drink in
the Old Eds' clubhouse afterwards !?
If you
click
here
to see a satellite map of the 'stadium', you will see the grass area
behind the far goal.
The
entrance to the Barrass Stadium car park
is at the
bottom of Houndsfield Road (N9 7RA is the postcode for SatNavs).
Houndsfield Road is a
turning off the Hertford Road in-between Bury Street & Galliard Road.
Look for The Cock Pub (unless it has now been re-named !?) on the corner
of Houndsfield Road and Hertford Road.
We will not be able to use changing rooms or showers, so players will
have to come prepared and get changed in their cars. |
|
|
|
GETTING
REGISTERED TO PLAY FOR US (and NEW PLAYERS WISHING TO JOIN THE CLUB) |
|
All NEW Players
joining the club MUST fill in a League Registration form and provide
Club Secretary Laurence Hughes with one passport-size (recently
taken) photo before they are allowed to play in any competitive game
for the club. (We have not
played a 'ringer' since the bad old days of the late-70's/early-80's
when we had to drag people away from walking their dogs to help us
field a team !)
Normally, registration forms & photos have to be with the League
Registration Secretary before mid-day on the Wednesday preceding a
match. However, at the start of each season the deadline is
roughly 10 days if you want to play in our first League Match of the
season.
(For this
season the deadline to play in our first match of the season on Sunday
7th September is therefore
Wednesday 27th August).
All players who
played for the club the previous season and intend to play for the club
this season are advised to re-register using
the League's 'Multi-Registration' Form, which has to be filled in before
mid-July. This form is always brought along to 7-a-side League matches. If you miss this deadline, you will
then have to provide a new passport-size photo (and fill in a full
registration form) as if you are a new player...which is obviously a
real 'hassle'.
Registration forms do not have to be filled in for you to play in
Pre-Season Friendlies.
For players
who are unable to play in the Summer 7-a-side League or Pre-Season
Friendlies in July & August (or attend the club's Annual General
Meeting), a full League Registration Form can be downloaded and
printed off from
here on the
League website.
Players must then fill in the left-hand side of the form ONLY in black
ink and block letters, then post it to Laurence Hughes at 9 Wimborne
Road, Edmonton, London N9 9EZ, together with a passport photo.
We prefer new players to be brought along to the club by existing
players so that we are aware of their background and ability, but if
other players want to join, they MUST be able to control and pass the
ball properly and have reasonable ability. If they have already played
for other clubs at a good standard, then that will be preferable.
Prospective new players who are not being brought along to the club by
existing members MUST contact
Laurence or Trevor
Hughes first
(preferably by e-mail) regarding their Age, Playing Position and
Previous Clubs (at least), otherwise we will not reply to them. More
importantly though, they MUST be able to read, write and speak English
properly !!! We pride ourselves on being a Multi-Racial club, but
some of the e-mails we sometimes receive have been an absolute joke, and
we have therefore not replied to them.
Most of these e-mails are from African teenagers (or their 'agents' !)
who seem to think that we are a Professional Club who can arrange a visa
or a work permit (in return for cash !) which will enable them to get
into the Country and claim benefit. Needless to say, we are not prepared
to go along with such 'scams' ! |
|
|
|
IF
YOU ARE RE-JOINING THE CLUB |
|
Players who wish to re-join the club this
season will also have to supply a new passport-size photo for the League
if they did not sign a registration form for us the previous season. Players re-joining the club
will also be informed by Club Treasurer Trevor Hughes if they still owe the club
any outstanding subs from their previous spell and if so,
these amounts MUST be paid in full before they are allowed to play in a
competitive match. |
|
|
|
ANNUAL
SUBSCRIPTIONS |
|
All players
(including any new players to the club) MUST pay a £25.00 Annual Subscription
to Club Treasurer Trevor Hughes before they play in any League match
this season. (The first League match of the season is on Sunday 7th September 2008). However,
if any players
who played for the club the previous season pay their Annual Subs on or
before the date of our Annual General Meeting (Sunday 10th August 2008), they will then only have to pay £20.00.
This incentive is so that we have enough money in club
funds to be able to pay pitch fees which are due in August.
Players who have
NOT paid their Annual Subscriptions will only be picked to play in
matches if there are not enough players available who HAVE paid and this
will be at Team Manager Trevor Hughes's discretion.
In the past we have let some new players play for the club (ahead of
others) before they had paid any money whatsoever (basically because they
were very good players and we were more likely to win if they
were in the team !) They then continued to play without paying
and built up a big backlog of subs owed, then when we threatened
to drop them they promptly left the club. We are therefore
determined that this will not happen again.
All non-playing members must pay an Annual Membership Subscription
of £10.00. This is for club officials and players who sign a
registration form just to help us out in emergencies and do not want
to be considered for a regular place in the side (e.g. Club
Secretary Laurence Hughes !).
If you
want to pay your Annual Subs (or any big backlogs of Weekly Subs you
might owe) straight into the club account via the Internet, please
e-mail
Laurence or
Trevor Hughes for the
account details. |
|
|
|
MATCH
FEES ('WEEKLY SUBS') |
|
All players must pay
£5.00
per match (for playing a full match only). This £5.00 'Match Fee'
also applies
to Pre-Season Friendlies and Summer 7-a-side League matches as well as for League & Cup Matches.
If a player is substituted in the First Half of a match, he will pay
£2.00 with the player replacing him paying £3.00.
If a player comes off at Half-Time, he will pay £2.50 and so will the
player replacing him.
If a player is substituted in the Second Half, he will pay £3.00 with
the player replacing him paying £2.00.
All players are advised to get into the ‘habit’ of bringing £5.00
to every game and keeping up to date with their subs rather than
building up a backlog. We currently have a rule (See 'Non-Payment of
Subs and the Punishments' below) which allows players to
build up a backlog of up to £20.00 before they are ‘suspended’ from
playing, this rule having been brought in to
allow players to pay on a monthly basis by cheque (payable to 'Edmonton
Rovers F.C.'). However, players who
have chosen to pay this way have ended up consistently owing the club
£19.00 (to avoid suspension) and have then suddenly found themselves over
the £20.00 limit after getting booked in a match (automatic £8.00 F.A. fine)
or by finding that their wages haven’t been paid on time from wherever
they work. Most players have now
decided to keep up to date instead and we strongly recommend that
everyone else follows their example.
All Subs must be paid to Team Manager & Treasurer Trevor Hughes. If
he
is not at a match, then other Management Committee Members will collect in
Subs instead. All
players are advised that they MUST pay their Subs before the kick-off if
they have got to 'shoot off' straight away on the Final Whistle without
having a shower. |
|
|
|
NON-PAYMENT
OF 'SUBS' AND THE PUNISHMENTS ! |
|
Players will be left out of the starting line-up if
they owe the club over £20.00
in subscriptions. This limit includes
Annual Subscriptions, Match Fees, 7-a-side Fees and any Fines incurred.
(This rule is subject to the availability of replacement players and at
the discretion of the Team Managers). |

|
SUBS
LISTS & FINE NOTICES |
|
Detailed monthly Club Circulars are no longer
produced as the majority of our players now have access to this website.
The only information that is NOT put on the Club Website is how
much subs are owed by individual players and details of any Club Fines
that have been handed out to players by the Club Management Committee. These
details will be e-mailed to players instead.
Club Members who do not
have an e-mail address will normally be informed verbally by a member of
the Management Committee. |
|
|
|
BOOKINGS |
|
Any player booked in a match where the
booking is not sent in to the F.A. by the referee will be fined up to a
maximum of £8.00 by the Management Committee, unless they decide no
fine is necessary. Where bookings are sent in to the F.A. by the
referee, then players will have to pay the F.A. Fine only
(which
currently stands at £8.00).
Players who are Booked five times or more in a season will be liable to
a further F.A. Fine (£10.00) and a 7-day suspension. |
|
|
|
SENDING-OFFS |
|
Any player sent off in a match where the
sending off is not sent in to the F.A. by the referee will be fined up
to a maximum of £20.00 by the Management Committee, unless they decide
no fine is necessary. Where sending-offs are sent in to the F.A.
by the referee, then players will pay the F.A. Fine only, although it
could be as much as £100.00 and an indefinite suspension depending on
the seriousness of the offence (e,g, Assaulting a referee, Head-Butting,
Causing a Match to be Abandoned, etc.)
A Sending-Off for a Professional Foul or for Two Bookable Offences is a
£15.00 Fine and a 7-day Suspension.
A Sending-Off for 'Serious Foul Play' is a
£15.00 Fine and a 21-day
Suspension.
A Sending-Off for Swearing at the Referee or 'Having a Ruck' is a
£25.00 Fine and a 35-day Suspension.
Players who are Sent Off while playing for
the club will NOT be played in matches (as a 'ringer') while they are
under an F.A. Suspension and they will also be charged with 'Bringing The
Club Into Disrepute' (See Below) if they have been Sent Off for a
particularly serious offence.
During the last
10 seasons we have only had four players
Sent-Off in 11-a-side matches, one of which was for an innocuous 'deliberate' handball on the
goal-line and another which was for two bookable fouls. It
is therefore a proud record which we wish to maintain. |
|
|
|
BRINGING
THE CLUB INTO DISREPUTE |
|
The Management Committee have the power
to fine, suspend or expel any member who they have deemed to be ‘bringing
the club into disrepute’ at training, matches or any other club
functions. Thankfully this hasn't happened too often in the club's
history (mainly because offending players have 'left/disappeared' of
their own accord before we had a chance to 'do anything with them' !) |
|
|
|
WEARING
JEWELLERY DURING A MATCH |
|
Any player who
is told to leave the field of play to remove or tape up jewellery during
a match will be fined 50p
(unless the Team
Manager decides
otherwise). All players should know that it is a FIFA regulation that
jewellery must not be worn in football matches, and this applies to
Sunday League Football
and 7-a-Side League matches as well ! |
|
|
|
EQUIPMENT
YOU WILL NEED |
|
All players are advised that
SHINPADS must
be worn in every match (Friendlies and 7-a-side League matches included), otherwise referees
will stop you from playing. All players must make an effort to
bring their own shinpads, as the club normally only has one spare
pair to use in 'emergencies'.
If players genuinely
forget to bring shinpads to matches, then no charge will be made for
using the spare shinpads from the club kit bag. It was originally
supposed to be £1.00 per match, but it is more or less impossible for
Management Committee Members to find out who has been wearing them.
However, if it becomes evident that a player is wearing club shinpads
every week because they are better than their own, then that player must
then buy them off the club for a nominal fee.
Players are also advised to bring their own SOCKS to matches if they
wish to wear two pairs of socks during a game in an effort to
avoid blisters. These socks must then be worn underneath the club colour
socks, otherwise we may be fined by the League for not having the
correctly coloured kit. |
|
|
|
SUBSTITUTES
ROLES |
|
All players are advised
that if they are named as a substitute in any match (Friendlies
included), they will be expected to help the Team Manager bring the
bucket, the medical kit, the drinking water ‘cool box’ and (if
necessary) the spare kit bag out onto the pitch before the kick-off.
They will also be responsible for looking after any balls that are not
being used. |
|
|
|
SUBSTITUTES
'GOING IN EARLY TO GET CHANGED' |
|
All players who
have been named as a substitute for a match must be ready to enter the
field of play (if required) right up until the final whistle (unless the
maximum permitted number of substitutions have already been made).
Unused substitutes who go in to get changed before the end of the match
(because they are cold or bored ?!) will be fined 50p
(unless the Team
Manager decides
otherwise) if they do so while there is still a chance that they
may be needed. |
|
|
|
GOALNET
ROTA |
|
Players must take down the goal-nets (and
bring in the corner flags) at the end of all Home matches. This will be
organised on a rota basis by Team Manager Trevor Hughes in conjunction
with the rota for sweeping out the showers & changing rooms and
announced before kick-off as part of his 'team-talk'. Goalnets are usually put up
before the match by Club Secretary Laurence Hughes and Players Rep Terry
Moore..
All players are
advised that they will be dealt with by the Management Committee if they
refuse to put up or take down goal-nets when they are on a Rota to do so. |

|
CLUB
LINESMAN |
|
Mercury Waltham Sunday League rules state
that all clubs must supply a linesman. However, unlike most other clubs
in the League, we have no non-playing club members whatsoever who are
willing to attend every match and do the job. (Normally it is the Club
Secretary, but Laurence Hughes films all our matches and therefore
cannot run the line as well). Invariably Manager
Trevor Hughes acts as Club Linesman because our substitutes are often
our younger players who are intimidated by opposing players and
supporters while running the line, and in several cases have cost us
matches by not concentrating.
Unfortunately though, Trevor will once again be missing a number of matches this
season, so substitutes will have to run the line whether they like it or
not. They will then have
£5.00 credit off their subs
(or £3.00, £2.50 or £2.00 if they only run the line for part of the
match), but if they refuse to run the line when
they are asked to do so, they will be fined up to £2.50 instead
(at the Team
Manager's discretion depending on the
circumstances).
If we do not provide a Club Linesman at all, then we get fined £5.00 by
the League, so anybody on the touchline who could have acted as Club
Linesman but refused to do so would then have to pay that fine.
If anybody has a
friend, relative or work colleague who no longer plays and is willing
and capable enough to be a regular Club Linesman for us (for £5.00 a
match !), please inform Laurence or Trevor Hughes. |

|
OUTFIELD
PLAYERS BEING 'FORCED' TO GO IN GOAL |
|
Following various
last-minute non-appearances by certain Rovers goalkeepers during the
past few seasons, we now have a
Rule whereby 'Any
outfield player who is forced to go in goal when a proper goalkeeper is
unavailable will be given £2.50 credit off his subs owed'. |
|
|
|
FLUID
REPLACEMENT ! |
|
All players are advised to bring their own drinks to
matches (particularly Pre-Season Friendlies) as there is never enough water
in the ‘cool box’ for everyone (mainly because spectators & unused
substitutes start drinking from it to quench their thirst caused by 'de-hydration'
after drinking 20 Jack Daniels & Cokes the night before !)
The water from the bottles in the 'cool box' can also taste rather
'foul' (see picture right !) because Laurence Hughes fills them up from
his tap in Edmonton (direct from Deephams Sewage Works at Picketts Lock
?), so until Trevor Hughes volunteers to take the bottles home to the
more 'luxurious surroundings' of Whetstone to fill them up there, all
players may be taking a risk by not bringing their own drinks. |
|
|
|
DIRTY
KIT AFTER MATCHES |
|
All players, and particularly new players to the
club, are advised that club
kit must be handed in immediately after each match
and turned the right way out (ready for washing),
then put in the green
plastic bag which is in the black kit
bag. The only kit which should be in the black kit bag at the end of
the match is clean (unused) kit. Players are also advised
that we only wash club kit, so no more underpants please !
Players who fail to hand in any item of club
kit after a match (including shinpads and tracksuit tops) will be fined £1.00
if it causes a
shortage for the next match. Any
club kit lost completely will see the player responsible having to pay
for a replacement. |
|
|
|
INJURY
INSURANCE POLICY |
|
New players are advised that we do
not have a club
injury insurance policy as most of our current players have their own
individual insurance (and also private healthcare). There are
numerous different companies that specialise in individual sports injury
insurance policies, so we couldn't really recommend any particular one. |

MATCH DVD's & WEBSITE SPONSORSHIP |
|
Our club is unique
(for a Sunday side) in that we have all our matches filmed
professionally (by Club Secretary Laurence Hughes...when he is not
playing !).
His company Hughes Video Services also sponsor the club by paying
£150.00 per season to have this club website online.
Fully edited & produced match DVD's (with titles & slow-motion
replays) can be bought by players the following Sunday at just £10.00
per copy, while approximately 20-25 minutes highlights of each game are
also produced as 80-minute long
Compilation DVD's featuring four matches on each volume.
These are then sold to current club members at just £5.00 per
Compilation, and they can be found listed
here on the Hughes Video Services website.

VIDEO CLIP LINKS |
|
We currently have a
montage of our goals and other good bits of action from the past 5 years
being shown on Sky's
SkyCast
website.
to view the footage. This was put together for us by Sky themselves !.
Ritchie Copues, one of our former Reserve Team players, has also started
up a Group on Facebook entitled
'Edmonton
Rovers - Have You Ever Worn The Fabled Jade Jersey ?'
and video clips will also be put on there.
Most of these clips will come from our
Video Clip Of The Week
page on this website, and that will invariably be where the footage is
shown first. |

CLUB
TOURS & SNOOKER NIGHTS |
|
Since 1986 when we went
on our first Club Tour to Holland, we have visited Germany
(twice), Spain (twice), Belgium, the Isle of Wight and most recently
Prague in 2001. However, we have since had difficulties in arranging Club Tours because
too many of our younger players cannot afford it, while our older
players now have too many family commitments.
The only club social nights we tend to arrange nowadays are 'Snooker
Nights', which are held at a secret venue that is organised by Manager &
Treasurer Trevor Hughes once or twice a season. This consists of
Pool & Darts competitions (and occasionally Snooker !) whereby players
win half of the entrance fee and the other half goes into Club Funds.
DVD's of matches are also shown, and with a 'licensed bar', it is always
a good 'night out' when we can get a reasonable number to attend. |
|
|
|
OUR
ATTITUDE ! |
|
Our basic policy as a
club is for our players to enjoy their football first and
foremost. It is very rare that we will have a major inquest or bust-up
in the changing rooms after a defeat - our players tend to just laugh it
off and then discuss any problems rationally after studying the
Match DVD's in order to see who was at fault.
The majority of our players are intelligent & well-educated, so the
changing rooms can be a dangerous place if you are not able to keep
up with all the banter and good-humoured 'piss-taking' that goes on
!
We also very rarely have any of our players 'throwing a tantrum' when
they get substituted, mainly because of our rule that gives them a
reduction in their subs if they do not play a full match ! In fact, we
often get the whole team pleading to be substituted because of
this (so that they can spend their money betting on Premiership matches
or on the fruit machines down the
pub afterwards !)
Our relaxed attitude and good team spirit is complimented by the club
being very well-run in terms of administration & on-the-field
behaviour, and quite often we end up being the only club in the League
not to get fined or have any players sent off during the course of a
season. |
