25th ANNIVERSARY
DINNER/DANCE
FRIDAY 28th SEPTEMBER 2001
The club
was officially 25 years old in July 2001 and we commemorated this achievement by
arranging a celebratory Dinner/Dance on Friday 28th September 2001 at
which Current & Former Players and their Wives, Girlfriends and
other Guests were invited.
This was held in the Lawns Suite at the David Lloyd Centre in Carterhatch Lane,
Enfield and although we only sold just over 100 tickets (at £30 each)
in the end instead of the 200 maximum, we only ended up making a loss of
approximately £200, which can easily be recouped by more fund-raising
ideas that are planned for the coming months. Indeed the evening was so
enjoyable for all the Current & Former Club Members that DID make an
effort to attend that we feel no concern is necessary at having to use
part of the current club funds to subsidise the Dinner as this was a
'one-off' event that will not be repeated every year.
After speaking to several people at the Dinner, the general consensus
regarding the disappointing absence of several notable ex-Club Members
was that, despite their 'official' excuses, their non-attendance was
mainly due to their concern that their wives & girlfriends would not
enjoy the evening as 'all the talk would be about football' ! Some
therefore decided not to bring their wives or girlfriends at all
(which wasn't a problem) but numerous wives & girlfriends DID attend
the Dinner and thoroughly enjoyed themselves as they willingly joined in
the banter with our Celebrity After-Dinner Speaker Rodney
Marsh and then
danced until 'chucking-out time' to the resident Disco while their
husbands & boyfriends chatted about 'Old Times' (and creased up
laughing at all the dodgy photos in the club scrapbooks !)
As expected, Rodney
Marsh was excellent
and confirmed his reputation as the best in the business, the 'in-house'
Disco was good and kept the ladies (and James Dyer) entertained and the
food and general layout/ambience of the room was superb (and our thanks
go to Dave Bagnall and his staff for that).
In addition to Rodney Marsh, we also heard highly amusing speeches from
former Assistant Secretary/'B' Team Manager Glenn
Weaver, Club Founder
Dave Ashton
and 'yours truly' Laurence
Hughes, but the best
part of the whole evening for many was just being able to meet up again
with numerous ex-Club Members who we had not seen for years...in
particular the likes of Paul
Noonan, Jerome Burnikell, Bobby Lake, Paul Parsons, Paul Scott, Kieran
Mc,Gregor, Karl Christodoulou and Paul Cullen
to name but a few.
In fact everyone enjoyed themselves so much that it took Dave Bagnall's
staff a full hour to persuade everyone to stop talking and go home and
the time absolutely 'flew by' !
All in all it was a
brilliant night and a big success for everyone who was there and those
who gave rather false or feeble reasons for missing the event (or didn't
bother to respond to their invitations) really missed out and may well
end up 'kicking themselves' !? |
